A quarter of new mothers say they feel forced to return to work earlier this September due to rules around childcare for nine-month-olds.
New parents say they are being forced to decide between cutting short their maternity leave or losing access to government childcare support.
From September 2024, up to 15 hours per week of free childcare will be extended to eligible working parents with a child from nine months old.
Parents on maternity leave must return to work before the end of the first month of the term in which they intend to use their childcare support to qualify.
It means that some of those who had planned to return to work in October or November - after waiting for their baby to turn one - are instead deciding to return in September to qualify for support.
If they miss the September window, they cannot apply for funding for the 15 free hours again until January - when it will apply for the following term.
Research from the maternity campaign group Pregnant Then Screwed shows a quarter of new mothers are returning to work earlier than they had planned next month, otherwise it would have cost them hundreds of pounds more in childcare.
