Four-time Grammy Award-winning British singer, Ed Sheeran has written an open letter to British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, to invest in music education. He has named a total of just GBP250 million, and several famous artists, including Elton John, Coldplay, and Harry Styles, have signed the letter.
World-famous singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran has just published an open letter to the UK government. He aims to get the government to come up with both short and long-term plans for music education. Ed grew up in a musical family, and although he sang in the church choir from the age of four, he taught himself to play an instrument in a self-taught way. In the open letter, he has suggested a case for GBP250 million (~US$300 million), for the investment that music education needs. Without this, he expressed a vision for the future and a criticism that is possible that there will be no music education in state schools, no one to teach, and no viable instruments for students to learn on. As an example, he also said that the music industry contributes GBP7.6 billion (US$9.8 billion) to the British economy.
"How many more venues need to close, how many music programs need to be cut before we realise that we can't just celebrate success, we have to protect the foundations that make it.", Ed Sheeran expressed his criticism.
In recent years, a series of economic problems have hit the British music sector. This has included increased supply, rental, and maintenance costs. Recently, the Night Time Industries Association announced a 31% drop in the number of UK clubs in 2023, almost a year's worth of data that saw more than 100 independent clubs close. Now Ed Sheeran has written an open letter to Sir Keir Starmer, British Prime Minister, to support music education. Several big musicians, including Fred Again, Harry Styles, Coldplay, and Elton John, signed the letter. Interestingly, the UK government is allocating GBP63.7 billion a year for school education for the 2025-26 school year.
