At Kingfisher we follow a free-flow system using 'planning in the moment' whereby we set an enabling environment and we encourage the children to explore and learn by their own interests. This approach to learning results in the children having higher levels of involvement and being engaged for longer periods of time rather than adult-led activities.
However, we still believe that the children should be involved in celebration activities, story and group times, music and P.E. sessions in order to prepare them for school so these will be included in our daily and weekly routines. In addition to this, as a very basic introduction to phonics, we will also have a 'sound of the week' (using the Jolly Phonics scheme) where the children will learn a sound through a fun song and be made aware of its associated letter.
Throughout the day, all the staff observe and interact with the children and look out for teachable moments in which they can make a difference. Every week, we have three focus children and the observations/interactions made by the staff are then recorded in the children's Learning Journeys.
