Supporting the publishing industry in Wales and promoting reading for pleasure is the main work of the Welsh Book Council.
As a national charity we were established in Aberystwyth in 1961 and we employ approximately 40 staff.
We provide specialist services to publishers in the fields of editing, design, marketing and distribution in order to ensure high standards in terms of producing and publishing material in Welsh or material in English relating to Wales.
We are also responsible for administering grants to support literary publishing and magazines in both languages, as well as an online news service.
Another important element of the Book Council's work is promoting literacy and reading for pleasure. We do this not only by ensuring a constant flow of publications but also by organizing a series of special activities celebrating reading, working together with a wide range of partners in the field.
Our funding comes partly from the Welsh Government and partly from the commercial activities and wholesale service of our Distribution Centre.
Our head office is in Brychan Castle in Aberystwyth while the Distribution Center is located on the Glanyrafon Enterprise Park on the outskirts of town.
