It is so important to take care of our own mental wellbeing. This week, #WorldWellbeingWeek, is designed to help provide young people with the tools and knowledge to best manage their mental health.
World Wellbeing Week looks closely at the 5 ways to wellbeing we can all practice in our daily lives, to help our mental health. These are to connect, be active, take notice, learn and give to others.
Strong relationships are so important for our mental wellbeing. It helps us built a sense of belonging and self-worth. It’s important to take the time to maintain these relationships.
Being active and exercising is not only incredibly important for our physical health; it is brilliant for our mental health.
Exercise leads to the production of endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in our brain that reduce our perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body giving you a mood boost.
It’s worth taking the time to find exercise you enjoy and will stick with. While children are young, encourage them to give different sports and activities a try. It is really worth while finding a form of exercise you enjoy.
Ensure you are being as active as you can throughout the day; park a little further from the shop, get off at a further bus stop, take the stairs instead of the lift, every little helps.
Living in the present moment and practising mindfulness has great benefits on our mental health. Slowing down and being more mindful allows us to enjoy life more and understand ourselves better.
Take just 5 minutes in the morning or night time to practice meditation to help you quieten your mind. To practise mindfulness, focus on one thing at a time; being aware as you are eating, spending time on a task such as painting, or taking moments out of the day for deep breathing.
Again, leaving devices such as phones in another room can really help us stay in the moment and present.
