World Book Day is a celebration of reading which takes place every year in the UK. Each year, to celebrate the day, children across the country dress up in creative and fun ways, to bring their favourite book character to life. It is a truly magical day, that promotes a love of reading for people of all ages.
A phrase which we have become all too used to hearing, but one which applies also to this event, is that it will be a little bit different this year, but some incredible initiatives are in place, to ensure the day, although different, will still be fantastic.
National Book Token’s £1 World Book Day Books:
Generously sponsored by National Book Tokens, schools and early years settings across the UK have been sent £1 book vouchers to children to purchase books. These vouchers will also appear on McDonald’s Happy Meal boxes and be valid beyond March 28th. These books are readily available and stocked in most major supermarkets. A fantastic initiative making the magic of reading available to all.
Here is a list of some of the £1 books available:

There are lots of fun virtual events happening all week to celebrate WBD. Live events are happening each day from Wednesday 3rd- Friday 5th of March at 10.30 am including ‘Books that make you LOL!’, ‘Words and Pictures: Bringing Books to Life’ brought to you by a star-studded cast of authors, illustrators, and hosts. You can check them out here.
To celebrate the day, members of the nurseriesandschools.org team, had a think about what their favourite book is or what it was when they were younger.
Check out our favourite books below, hopefully, you will pick up some recommendations!
Eimear-
Eimear’s favourite book is ‘Into the Magic Shop’ an autobiography written by a neurosurgeon, Dr. James R. Doty. This book follows the story of a young boy who comes from a challenging background; no one really believes in the young boy, certainly not himself. Until he stumbles upon a magic shop, with a lovely lady working inside. This woman saw something in him, she respected him and most importantly, she listened to him. The lady in the shop teaches him something that changes the course of his life entirely. A truly magical true story people of all ages would be inspired by.
Melanie-
Melanie’s book of choice is the incredibly funny and entertaining ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ by Richard Osman. This diabolically clever 'Who Done it' is set in a luxury retirement home where four unlikely friends face real-life murders to solve. Melanie and her family loved this book and would definitely recommend it as a perfect, easy lockdown read that is sure to put a smile on your face!
Laraigh-
Laraigh’s favourite childhood book is ‘George's Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. The story follows a boy who is forced to stay with his witchlike nan while his parents go shopping. George makes medicine that makes his nan grow taller than a house. George was asked to replicate the medicine, but he couldn't remember what he had put in it and when he made a second batch and gave it to his nan, it made her shrink so much that she disappeared! A very funny must-read for young comedy lovers!
We hope you have a brilliant day celebrating World Book Day 2021, whether you’re diving into a famous autobiography, picking up where you left off in a hilarious romance, or reading your child a classic fairy tale, we hope you enjoy and appreciate the magic books can bring to your life today and every day!
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”- Dr. Seuss.
