Family Safety- Enjoying Fireworks with our Little Ones

October 10, 2023

By: Toni Frost

As a  nation autumn triggers excited thoughts of woolly jumpers,  hot chocolate, and of course bonfire parties. Fireworks are a dazzling display of lights and colours that captivate both children and adults. However, it's essential to remember that fireworks can be dangerous if  not handled properly.  As parents and carers,  it's our responsibility to ensure the safety of our children during fireworks displays. In this blog post, we will discuss some crucial tips to keep children safe around fireworks.

Attend Public Fireworks Displays: One of the safest ways for children to enjoy fireworks is by attending public displays organised by professionals. These events are conducted under controlled conditions, with safety measures in place. Public displays ensure that the fireworks are set off at a safe distance from the spectators, minimizing the risk of accidents or injuries.

Keep a Safe Distance: If you decide to have a private fireworks display, be sure to keep your children at a safe distance. Establish a designated viewing area that is far enough from the fireworks, allowing everyone to observe the spectacle without being too close to the launching site. Our early years children are more likely to want to help and be involved when this activity is taking place in familiar surroundings. Follow all local laws and regulations regarding fireworks usage.

Supervise at All Times: Never leave children unsupervised around fireworks. Assign a responsible adult to be in charge of supervising them during the fireworks display. This person should be attentive, sober, and knowledgeable about fireworks safety. Keep younger children within arm's reach, and ensure older children understand the importance of following safety rules.

Teach Firework Safety: Take the time to educate your children about firework safety. Explain that fireworks are not toys and should only be handled by adults. Teach them about the potential risks, such as burns, eye injuries, and noise-related trauma. Emphasize the importance of never approaching or picking up fireworks that have not ignited properly.

Protective Measures: Encourage children to wear safety goggles or glasses to protect their eyes from sparks or debris. Dress them in long-sleeved tops, long trousers, and closed-toe shoes to minimize the risk of burns. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of any accidents or emergencies.

Pet Safety: Remember that fireworks can be extremely distressing for pets. Keep them indoors in a secure and quiet area during fireworks displays. Create a comfortable space for them, and consider playing soothing music to help mask the noise.

So please always remember: While fireworks can be a source of joy and excitement, it's crucial to prioritize the safety of our children. By following these guidelines, we can ensure that they have a memorable and safe experience during fireworks displays. Remember, responsible adult supervision, adherence to safety rules, and attending public displays are key to keeping our children protected and allowing them to enjoy the magic of fireworks without unnecessary risks. Let's make safety a priority and create lasting memories for our families.

Have a safe and wonderful autumn.
